What is the Buddy Program?
The primary purpose of a buddy family is to help new families integrate smoothly into their new environment by providing practical assistance, answering questions, sharing local knowledge, and offering support. This can include anything from helping them navigate the school system or local services, to introducing them to community events and social activities, and simply being a friendly face to turn to when needed.

Buddy families play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion, especially for individuals or families who may feel isolated or uncertain in their new surroundings. By connecting newcomers with settled members of the community, buddy families facilitate the formation of social connections and networks, which can contribute to a positive overall experience for everyone involved.

The PTV will do its best to match families according to kids’ grades, nationality and area, based on family availability.
Buddy Expectations

What do I have to do if I register?

Connect with the matched family, answer their questions, and offer support and guidance. We all remember what it is like to be in a new country and not know where to buy school supplies! Engagement levels will vary, but we expect you to send a welcome email and provide an opportunity for the new family to connect with you.

Ensure new families know where to find information. Encourage new families to attend back-to-school events such as PTV coffees and the Back to School BBQ hosted by MIS.

This could be a play date, a coffee, a hike or even just a wander around town before school starts. Otherwise you can meet up on the first day of school. Whatever works best between the matched families.
